Here is an image showing one of the rare Ideal #7 tools. These tools were listed in the first five Ideal handbooks and gone by #12. Here is what Ideal said about the tool in handbook #4..."This tool is only made for loading the 44 X.L. shot cartridges. The shells are the well-known 44 W.C.F., same as is used in the Colt's Lightning rifle, and the Marlin 44 Cal., 89 model. The shot cases can be had of Merwin & Hulbert of New York City, and with a set of these tools and the shot cases the possessor of a rifle that is of the above calibre may have all the fun he desires in shooting sparrows and other small birds or animals, rat, &c. The X. L. shot gun is well known among the taxidermists. The weight of this tool, complete, 16 ounces. Nicely finished and nickel plated. Price.....$1.75."

Well, they may have been well known amongst the taxidermists of 1900, but apparently not many of them bothered to buy the tool as they are seldom seen today. This example is in fine condition with most of the original nickel plating intact.
