The "cylindrical" mold was Ideal's answer to the need for an adjustable mold for making paper patched bullets. Some early "Perfection" molds also were made for production of smooth bullets, but the "Cylindrical" was Ideal's preferred tool for that purpose. Perfection molds were patented in 1891 and cylindrical molds bear a patent date of Jan 10, 1893. Infrequent early cylindrical molds have only "patent appl'd for", whereas  later variants  have the actual patent date (Jan 10,  93) stamp. Perfection-type moulds for paper patch bullets were advertised in the first and second Ideal Handbooks. The Ideal Handbook #3 lists Perfection-type paper patch moulds alongside "cylindrical" moulds; however, by the 4th edition, only the "cylindrical" moulds for paper patched bullets were listed. It seems likely that "Perfection-style" moulds for paper patched bullets were discontinued by about 1894 or 95. Cylindrical moulds are continuously adjustable, have knurled locking nuts for "setting" the adjustment and perform well in actual use.
