This composite image shows some of the loading accessories used in the heavy "slug guns" late in the nineteenth century. This particular rifle was made by Patrick Smith; he worked in Buffalo New York around 1860-1875. He built high quality percussion target rifles...this 50 caliber example weighs in at 24 pounds and, for our purposes, is interesting because it has the loading accessories with it. Not all the tools are original, but this set gives a good idea of the tools used with these rifles. The loading tools are shown in the center panel and include two bullet molds for making each end of the two part "slug", nipple wrench, bullet starter, and swage. An example of a completed bullet is also seen. These heavy old rifles are still capable of excellent accuracy, and we are waiting for an accuracy report from the owner of this one!!
