This mold is clearly marked "W T & J Garratt" referring to William Thompson (Garratt) and his brother, Joseph Garratt, partners in a brass and bell foundry business in San Francisco. Tom Quigley reported on this mold and the historical events surrounding its production in an article published in The Gun Report, volume 45, number 3 (August 1999), p. 34-37. According to Tom, the "W T and J" marking suggested the mold was likely made sometime between 1851 and 1864 (the 1864-1865 city directory only listing W.T. Garratt). The mold itself is about 0.57 caliber and casts a grooved Minie ball. The overall appearance of the mold is reminiscent of the "Sharps Nippes" pattern.
