Here is what appears to be an original Evans loading tool instruction sheet. This rare sheet is presented courtesy of Mr. Wade Ingrham and G. Scott Jamieson. Evans molds and tools are briefly discussed in Quigley and Chamberlain's book entitled Cartridge Reloading Tools of the Past (p. 134), and in Dwight B. Demeritt Jr.'s book Maine Made Guns and Their Makers (p. 142), but information relating to them is scarce. This rare instruction flyer details several tools in the Evans' set. The diagrams on the top part of the instruction sheet are shown....the bottom half of the flyer contains the following written instructions:
FIRST- Place expanded shell in Reducer as shown in Figure 1, then drive shell in to its flange, then reverse and drive out in the same operation. Care must be taken so strike squarely on end of shell and on soft wood, see Figure 1A. This operation may be repeated if required for further reducing the shell. The shells are reduced much easier if outside is covered with oil or soap suds before reducing.
SECOND- Place reduced shell in Cylinder, Figure 2 at A and drive out primer with Cap Extractor, Figure 3. Ream out inside of shell with Reamer, Figure 3 at B.
THIRD- Place unprimed shell in opening in Mould, Figure 4 at C, place Primer, shut Mould tightly, which presses Primer fully home.
FOURTH- Place primed shell in Cylinder, Figure 2 at A, pour in powder, set in bullet and drive home with Ball Seater, Figure 5. By turning Section D half around seats ball properly; by returning Section D to first position gives right length to drive out from Cylinder the finsihed Cartridge.
You can "click" on the mould, ball seater cylinder, and ball seater plunger to see closer views along with real tools. "Clicking" on the other tools will show larger images too. Use the "back" button to return to this page.
