This interesting 4 cavity 40 caliber mold with rotary sprue cutter is faintly hand stamped "N. S. B" for Norman S. Brockway on the top of the sprue cutter handle (squint really hard, use your imagination and maybe you can see that in the insert). The mold casts four similar slugs of about 40 caliber. Norman Brockway was a famous gunsmith, riflemaker and shooter who was born March 13, 1841 in New Hampshire. He had a long and distinguished career, working during the Civil War at Springfield Armory, and later for Smith & Wesson, Norwich Arms, and as maker of fine quality, heavy target rifles. There is a wealth of material about Brockway in the gun collecting literature. One excellent source is The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle by Ned H. Roberts. That book shows a picture of a similar mold and attributes it to J. H. Huntoon. According to Roberts, Brockway made rifles from about 1867 to the late 1880's. His rifle building career was curtailed by a fall off the roof of his house. After that injury he was not able to continue building rifles himself. He did, however, form a partnership with Huntoon and they worked together making similar target rifles for a number of years.
