This tool is what has been called the "Ladd-type" tool. This one is unmarked, but appears to be for the 44-40. Rare Ladd marked tools are known; however, those have a somewhat different appearance. The "Ladd" attribution of these unmarked tools is somewhat tentative. Ladd tools were nicely discussed by Tom Quigley in The Gun Report, Volume 42, number 2, p. 22-27 (July 1996) in an article entitled "C. D. Ladd Loading Tools and Their Kin".

This next image shows another example of a Ladd-style capping and seating tool. This one is quite similar to the one above, but has a larger frame and appears to be for the 45-60 cartridge. Both tools show traces of original gold paint. This one is unmarked; a 45-70 cartridge will not fit into the seating chamber. Both of these tools would have been used with a metal rod to push the loaded cartridge from the seating chamber via a hole in the top of it.
