This mold has no maker markings, but is of the Ladd-type. Ladd tools were nicely discussed by Tom Quigley in The Gun Report, Volume 42, number 2, p. 22-27 (July 1996) in an article entitled "C. D. Ladd Loading Tools and Their Kin". This mold has hand-stamped caliber markings for .44 Russ. and 44-40; it is not clear which (if either) is the original marking. The somewhat pointed bullet would be unusual for 44 Winchester because flat pointed bullets were safer for use in the tubular magazines of the '73 and '92 Winchesters. This particular example is another tool bearing the HJG stamp....Henry J. Gier was an early collector and student of loading tools. He stamped many tools with his initials, and HJG marked specimens are not infrequently seen in the collector's market.
