Here is a composite image showing a beautiful example of the nickel plated early variant of the Remington neck sizing tool in 44   2  7/16". Period promotional literature referred to these tools as "Shell Expander and Reducers"; some collectors call them "Remington basket tools". Call them whatever you wish, but call them rare. The early tools, like this one, have small, matching numbers stamped on the inside surface of each handle. In this particular example the matching numbers are "40"; they probably represent assembly numbers, although their significance is not known for certain. Ed Curtis is assembling a database of the calibers and assembly numbers on these tools for publication, and you are invited to contribute to that if you can. Later variants typically do not show the assembly numbers, and are finished with a combination of brick red paint and nickel plating.
