The 1874/1882 patented tool has an overall "look" that is quite similar to the third type of 1880 tool. Both have adjustable two-piece seating chambers locked in place with a knurled ring. The 1882 tool, however, has an extraction plate for removing loaded cartridges from the seating chamber; that is different than the "claw-like" extensions of the frame used for that purpose in the 1880 tools.

The seating chambers of the 1882 tool may be encountered with "observation" or "inspection" ports which are either oblong or round. Some are also seen with no port. The oblong "observation" ports are noted in at least two different sizes, varying in width most prominently. Compare the shape of the "inspection" ports on these two 45 caliber tools: 45 S.S. P  &  45-100.S.S P. Occasional tools have the adjustable chamber, but no inspection port.    The adjustable 1882 model tools were generally produced for the longer sporting or target cartridges with 40-70 and 40-90 examples most frequently encountered. All adjustable Winchester loading tools can be considered scarce, if not rare.
