Fourth model Winchester iron moulds without the wooden handle are sometimes seen marked for sale or distribution by others. Schoverling, Daly and Gale (S.D. & G) and Marlin (M.F.A.) marked moulds are probably the most frequently seen examples in that class. Here is an image of an early Winchester fourth model mold without any markings whatsoever. The mold is 40 caliber and casts a flat pointed bullet. It may be that such molds were made with the expectation that caliber/distributor marks were to be applied later. It seems unlikely that Winchester would have distributed unmarked molds at a time when a number of different calibers were available from them. It is also possible that this mold may have been secreted out of the production factory by an inventive, but dishonest employee.
